Grow Food Seattle
In 1907, this happy old home was built as a farm house in the middle of an apple orchard located in Ravenna the same year it was annexed by Seattle. Coincidentally, a century later, a girl who grew up among apple and pear orchards, moved in with a boy who bought this old house and today we are working together to restore its original surroundings that once flourished here so long ago. During the last two years, in addition to a 260 foot vegetable patch, we’ve put in 2 dwarf apples trees, 2 pears, a plum, an apricot, 2 grape vines, 2 kiwis, a fig, 6 lingonberries, 5 blueberries and a partridge in a pear tree. To a farmer, it’s merely a postage stamp. To an urbanite, it’s Eden. We like to think of it as something in between. Something just right.
As a transplant from orchard country, my childhood was spent in my parents’ farms and gardens developing a deep-rooted appreciation for the privilege, satisfaction and value of growing our own food. My parents are both minimalists and naturalists, and with their combined knowledge and experience as my resource, I grow my urban farm as I grow my skills and, through blogging, I share. My name is Alyse and I grow food in Seattle.
