Crooked Rows, Highs and Lows

by Alyse on Saturday, March 13, 2010

Today was one of those days when I just didn’t want to get out of my pajamas. After hours of feeling grumpy and accomplishing nothing, I finally decided the pockets of sunshine would not continue on forever no matter how hard I hoped so I got it together and headed outside armed with spinach seeds. I must have been sleepy or blinded by the sun because after sowing the spinach, I stepped back to admire my work only to find that my new row couldn’t be any more crooked! It wouldn’t stand out so much if the other rows didn’t appear to have been drawn out with a yard stick. My obsessive side wanted to re-do it but my lazy side said let it be, it’s got “character”. I then pulled about twenty weeds and pondered the ever-pressing question: Where am I going to fit everything? The garden is starting to look crowded and I still need space for the warmer crops of cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, basil, and peppers! My boyfriend and I joke that one day we will bulldoze the house to make room for more vegetables in the yard.

My work didn’t end there. I washed the mud off of my tarps and hung them up to dry after they protected my seedlings from last week’s frost. I’m placing my bet that Spring is here to stay and we’ve seen our last low temperatures so it’s time to put the tarps away for good. I guess we’ll see.
