To finally have a hot summer day grace the garden felt like a blessing worth celebrating. Truth be told, I don’t feel like a gardener every day. Some days the weeds and the slugs and the rain get the better of me and when I walk by the garden I simply see chores but not today. Maybe it was the warm setting sun we’ve been waiting so long to see or maybe it was the cocktail I had earlier but every weed I pulled and every gallon of water I carried felt comforting, calming and serene.
In addition to the usual tasks like watering, weeding and inspecting for pests, today’s work included harvesting some turnips and lettuce, sowing a new row of bok choy and laying organic slug bait. Afterwards, I took a moment to capture the beauty that surrounds me in my tiny plot of paradise.
And the crème de la crème…a turnip!
Turnips bring me to another truthful confession: I love them. I never thought I would but my dad talked me into growing turnips this year – promising me that they would be so much better than the woody, bitter, radish-like things I always expected them to be. He was right – as dads usually are. They are tender, mildly flavored between a radish and a carrot, and quite cute.
